Site Observations - Part One

Two potential site observations were undertaken today in Brisbane City surveying King George Square and the square in front of the Treasury Casino. Below is a summary of the notes and photographs taken which will be compiled for our final documentation.

Public site: King George Square

Time and Day: 2:45pm Thursday 7th May 2015
King George Square was surveyed as a potential site for Team Design REHAB's public installation. Situated in Brisbane City, King George Square is a popular space of both transit and relaxation, and is situated between two busy road crossings. A variety of people were observed passing through and enjoying the space, particularly students, business people and tourists. Social interaction is also high - most people were observed in groups and interacting with each other. A journalist was also observed conversing with strangers and successfully receiving participation in his surveys, a positive sign that people are likely to interact with an installation at this site. In addition, a previous temporary installation was being packed up during the observation time, indicating that the site is recognized as a successful place for user participation in public attractions.
On reflection, this is a highly prospective site to consider for the team installation.

Public site: Treasury Casino Square
Time and Day: 4:45pm Thursday 7th May 2015
Treasury Casino is located in Brisbane City on an busy road crossing and a busy transit area. The time of survey wasn't ideal as the space wasn't as busy as anticipated. The largest group present at the site was passers-by, though people were seen relaxing on benches. The demographic was generally perceived to be older than the people seen at King George Square and were generally alone. Possibly due to the time, people seemed busier and traveled with greater determination and purpose, thus they may be less likely to interact with public displays. That said, people were observed taking photographs with the large sphere art displays, though these people are in the minority.
Though this site should be considered as a prospective location, it is perceived that other locations may be more appropriate.

More sites will be investigated in the coming days.
